Finnan: Pain of relegation never leaves you

He's toasted triumphs in the Champions League, FA Cup and European Super Cup. He's worn winners' crowns from the first division, second division and third division. Steve Finnan, far right, has been synonymous with success, glory and fulfilling footballing dreams.

But it's the painful scars of relegation which refuse to heal, even to this day. And the 33-year-old has no intention of opening old wounds now he's back in the Premier League with Pompey. Nor does he think he will do.

Finnan made 216 appearances during a trophy-laden Liverpool career. He also won two promotions with Fulham and one with Notts County.

Yet, it was with the latter club where he also experienced the agony of relegation for the first and only time in his career.

Wow, it's really quiet here! :(

Anyway, Finns made his debut for Portsmouth last week against Wolverhampton Wanderers, and I found two interviews/articles, a little quote about the penalty that was denied to Wolves, and some pictures!

Finns was called up by Giovanni Trapattoni for Ireland's upcoming World Cup qualifiers against Bulgaria and Italy, but unfortunately he won't be able to play because he still hasn't overcome the damn hamstring injury he sustained on his debut in La Liga. *sigh* Why do such things have to happen? I'm so sorry for him.

Here's a related article:

Finnan to miss World Cup qualifiers

Steve Finnan has been forced to withdraw from the Republic of Ireland squad for the upcoming FIFA World Cup 2010 qualifiers against Bulgaria and Italy.

The Espanyol defender's career has been disrupted by injury since he left Liverpool for the Spanish league in August. A thigh injury ruled him out of last month's qualifier win over Georgia. Having recovered from that problem, and assuring the manager of his fitness, Trapattoni named the 32-year-old in his 26-man squad earlier this week. However, Finnan since suffered a recurrence of a hamstring injury that has already forced him to miss three weeks of action back in September when he first sustained it on his La Liga debut.

Trappattoni must now choose whether to stick with Stephen Kelly at right back for the qualifying games or bring back Paul McShane, who also missed the Georgia match through injury. Finnan’s withdrawal leaves Trapattoni with 25 players to choose from as he prepares to finalise his panel of 23 for tomorrow week’s Bulgaria game.

Ireland will then travel to Bari to take on group favourites Italy on 1 April.

Finnan passes medical

Irish international Steve Finnan, Espanyol’s last signing of the transfer window, underwent a medical examination this morning before joining up with the rest of Márquez’s squad. The player was subject to stringent checks at the Clinica Creu Blanca, despite having checked over fully before signing his contract on the 31st of August.

Finnan only arrived in Barcelona El Prat last night and was called straight up into the squad. This morning he missed training due to the medical tests but will be officially presented as a Perico this evening at 6pm at the Estadi Olímpic de Lluis Companys. His first training session will have to wait until tomorrow morning and only then will he train with his new team-mates.

The ex-Liverpool star has played in two matches since finalising his transfer to Espanyol, both games being with the Irish national team. Ireland beat troubled Georgia last Saturday 1-2 and drew 0-0 on Wednesday with Montenegro. In both games, the new Blanquiazul wingback started from the off but was substituted against Georgia in the 80th minute.

Spanish side Espanyol have swooped to sign Steve Finnan from Liverpool.

The Republic of Ireland full-back has not featured for The Reds this season after falling out-of-favour with manager Rafa Benitez.

The 32-year-old had been linked with a host of Premier League clubs but he has now sealed a move to La Liga.

The Barcelona-based club have handed Finnan a two-year deal.

The move brings to an end a five-year stay for Finnan at Anfield, where he made just short of 150 appearances.

GOOD LUCK TO STEVIE!
